Electric Vehicle FAQ — Pacific Northwest Edition
Real answers to the questions Pacific Northwest drivers actually ask about EVs. No hype, just numbers.
Charging & Costs
How much does it cost to charge an EV in Oregon?
About $0.03-0.05 per mile, compared to $0.12-0.15 per mile for gas.
| Utility | Residential Rate | Cost per 100 miles | |---------|------------------|-------------------| | PGE | $0.12/kWh | $3.60 | | Pacific Power | $0.11/kWh | $3.30 | | Eugene Water & Electric | $0.08/kWh | $2.40 |
A typical EV uses about 30 kWh per 100 miles. At Oregon's average rate, that's $3-4 to drive 100 miles vs. $12-15 in a gas car.
How much does public fast charging cost?
$0.40-0.48 per kWh at most DC fast chargers (Electrify America, EVgo, ChargePoint).
That works out to roughly $12-15 for 100 miles — similar to gas. Home charging is where EVs save money.
Is it cheaper to charge at night?
Yes, if you're on a time-of-use plan.
- PGE: Off-peak rates (9pm-7am) are ~$0.08/kWh vs. $0.15/kWh peak
- Pacific Power: Off-peak is ~$0.06/kWh vs. $0.12/kWh peak
Set your car to charge after 9pm and you'll cut charging costs by 40-50%.
How long does it take to charge an EV at home?
8-10 hours on a Level 2 charger (240V), which adds 25-30 miles of range per hour.
Most PNW drivers plug in when they get home and wake up to a full battery. A standard 120V outlet works too but only adds 3-5 miles per hour — fine for plug-in hybrids, slow for full EVs.
Range & Weather
How does rain affect EV range?
Minimally — maybe 3-5% reduction.
Rain itself doesn't hurt range much. Running the defroster and wipers uses a bit more energy, but nothing significant. PNW drizzle won't strand you.
How does cold weather affect EV range?
Expect 15-25% range loss below 40°F, and up to 35% in extreme cold (below 20°F).
A 300-mile rated EV might get 220-250 miles in a cold January week. The battery heater and cabin heater both draw power. Pre-conditioning while plugged in helps — the car warms up using wall power, not battery.
What's the real-world range of popular EVs in the Pacific Northwest?
| Model | EPA Range | Winter Range (est.) | |-------|-----------|---------------------| | Tesla Model 3 LR | 333 mi | 250-280 mi | | Tesla Model Y LR | 310 mi | 230-260 mi | | Hyundai Ioniq 5 LR | 303 mi | 225-255 mi | | Ford Mustang Mach-E | 312 mi | 235-265 mi | | Rivian R1S | 321 mi | 240-270 mi | | Chevy Bolt EUV | 247 mi | 185-210 mi |
Plan for the winter numbers and you'll never get caught short.
Can I drive an EV to Mt. Hood for skiing?
Absolutely. Portland to Mt. Hood Meadows is 67 miles. Even with cold weather range loss, any modern EV handles this round trip easily.
Charging options at the mountain are limited, so leave Portland with 80%+ and you'll be fine. Timberline Lodge has a few ChargePoint stations if you need a top-up.
Buying & Models
What's the best EV under $40,000 in 2026?
Top picks:
- Chevy Equinox EV ($35,000) — 319 miles range, practical SUV
- Hyundai Ioniq 5 SE ($38,000) — 303 miles, fast charging
- Tesla Model 3 ($39,000) — 272 miles, best charging network
- Chevy Bolt EUV ($28,000) — 247 miles, best value
All qualify for the used EV tax credit if bought used ($4,000 credit for qualifying vehicles).
Should I buy or lease an EV?
Lease if: You want a new EV every 3 years, don't drive more than 12,000 miles/year, or want lower monthly payments.
Buy if: You drive a lot, plan to keep the car 5+ years, or want to avoid mileage limits.
Leasing can still capture federal incentives through dealer pass-through, even after the 2025 credit changes.
Are EVs reliable?
Yes — fewer moving parts means less to break.
No oil changes, no transmission fluid, no spark plugs. Brakes last 100,000+ miles thanks to regenerative braking. The main long-term concern is battery degradation, but most modern EVs retain 80-90% capacity after 100,000 miles.
Apartment & Condo Charging
Can I own an EV if I live in an apartment?
Yes, but it takes planning.
Options:
- Workplace charging — Many Portland and Seattle employers offer free charging
- Public Level 2 — ChargePoint, Blink stations at grocery stores, malls
- DC fast charging — 20-30 min weekly at Electrify America or Tesla
- Ask your landlord — Oregon law requires landlords to allow EV charger installation in many cases
Does Oregon require apartments to allow EV charging?
Yes, with conditions. Oregon's SB 1044 (2019) requires landlords to allow EV charger installation if:
- You pay for installation and electricity
- The installation meets building codes
- You have a dedicated parking space
Washington has similar provisions. Check with your landlord or HOA.
Road Trips
Can I road trip an EV from Portland to Seattle?
Easily. It's 175 miles with fast chargers every 30-50 miles along I-5.
Most EVs can make it non-stop. If you need to charge, a 15-20 minute stop at Centralia or Chehalis adds 100+ miles.
What about Portland to Boise?
Doable with one or two charging stops. It's 430 miles via I-84.
Stop at The Dalles, Pendleton, or La Grande. Each has DC fast charging. Plan for 5-6 hours total including charging.
Which charging network is best in the Pacific Northwest?
| Network | Speed | Reliability | Coverage | |---------|-------|-------------|----------| | Tesla Supercharger | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | | Electrify America | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | | ChargePoint | ⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | | EVgo | ⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐ |
Tesla's network is the gold standard. Non-Tesla EVs can now use most Superchargers with an adapter or NACS port.
Common Concerns
What happens if I run out of charge?
Same as running out of gas — you stop. But it's rare if you plan.
Your car will warn you repeatedly as you get low. Most EVs can limp for 10-20 miles after hitting "0" displayed range. AAA and most roadside services now offer mobile EV charging.
How long do EV batteries last?
8-15 years or 100,000-200,000 miles before significant degradation.
Most manufacturers warranty the battery for 8 years/100,000 miles. Real-world data shows most EVs retain 80-90% capacity well beyond that.
Are EVs safe?
Yes — often safer than gas cars. EVs have lower centers of gravity (better rollover protection) and no flammable fuel tank. Tesla, Rivian, and most modern EVs score top safety ratings.
